With the success of our guild’s last two Dream Team Wedding (DTW) Seminars, we were approached by the Florida Professional Photographers and our own Donna Campiz (FPP Convention Chair) to do it again, but at the FPP Convention! If you’re not familiar with the Dream Team Wedding Seminar, it is a full day of education from top wedding photographers from around the country who take you through an entire day of a typical wedding and how they photograph the different aspects of the wedding, from getting ready to the ceremony, from formals to the reception.
Our President, Pat Tankersley, took the reins and started the ball rolling getting some amazing talent lined up to photograph the various segments of a wedding day. The Dream Team Photographers included: Julie Hughes, Susan and Stewart Powers, Stephanie Rounds, Mario Muno, Jr., Rick Ferro, Al Gordon, and Hanson Fong.
Orlando photographer, Stephanie Rounds, did an amazing job finding local vendors who donated their products and services to the wedding / seminar and transformed two ball rooms – one for the ceremony and the other for the reception. But this was not a wedding with models portraying the couple or the bridesmaids and groomsmen. This was a real wedding of two photographers from the Tampa area who met at this very convention two years ago – Brian Idocks and Derica Sonnon – with their close family and friends and about 75 wedding photographers as students/guests.
The seminar began with Julie Hughes and the “Bride Getting Ready” segment with the Bride and Bridesmaids. While some of the intimate details were photographed in private, Julie showed how you can work to create beautiful images using what is available around you. And as sometimes happens on a typical wedding day, Julie showed how to handle situations where the lighting may not work as originally planned. Stewart and Susan Powers then demonstrated how they work with Groom and Groomsmen as they also get ready as well as photographing some of the details that are unique to the guys. Mario Munoz, Jr., heated it up a bit with some glamour/funky bridal portraits and brought the group outside then back inside to unique places (like under the stairs where the sun was creating some cool patterns through the open steps) to create amazing images. Rick Ferro brought everyone back in to demonstrate photographing the formal groom portraits and getting some amazing shots in a place as simple as a large hotel meeting room.
Everyone then moved downstairs to the ballroom that was transformed for the wedding ceremony. We had the opportunity to watch and learn from Rick Ferro and Stephanie Rounds as they captured all the details of the ceremony. After the wedding ceremony was over, Hanson Fong showed how he works with the couple and their families and bridal party for the formal family and bridal party portraits – including how to work with large groups as well as children in the grouping.
As the reception began, Al Gordon and Stewart and Susan Powers, provided insight into how they use additional lighting at the reception and took attendees through all the details of photographing the reception including the first dance, father/daughter and mother/son dances, cake cutting, bouquet tossing, etc.
After the reception, Al Gordon led the couple and the group to several different locations throughout the hotel to photograph the couple portraits – on the stairway using different posing and focusing techniques, in the bar where Brian and Derica met, etc. Julie Hughes even jumped in to photograph some of the couple with a few members of another large group (those competing in the International Yo-Yo Championships) as they did their cool yo-yo tricks in the background. It was all about finding different ways to use what is available and finding unique settings or places that you may have never thought of to create amazing images.
The events of the day led up to the grand exit presented Julie Hughes. Unfortunately, it was pouring outside so it was somewhat limited, but Julie made it work. We all gathered and sent Brian and Derica off on their new life and with that, the seminar was over.
While a normal wedding day doesn’t have instruction and moves quickly, it was so wonderful to see how each of the superstar photographers works with either natural light, flash, inside, outside, beautiful location, or not.
This day could have not been put on without the help of these amazing vendors: Lynda Whitney – hair, Elvin – Makeup, Den Daniele of Grant Hemond – DJ, Fourish – Ceremony Florals, Lana of Fairbanks – Bridal Party flowers, Lee Forrest Designs and Flowers by Lesley – Reception Florals, Anna Cakes – Wedding Cake, Kirk Kief – Grooms Cake, Burrell Color Imaging – Programs, and Steve Metz – Up lighting and Projected Monograms. Thanks also to the JPPG Board of Directors who worked behind the scene to make everything go as smoothly as possible. And special thanks to Pat Tankersley and Stephanie Rounds for all the work you did to pull this together and make it a huge success!
Congratulations Brian and Derica!!
