Please note that our meeting date is one week later than normal due to Thanksgiving. Social time begins at 6:30pm with announcements and meeting beginning at 7:00pm. Members, don’t forget your 8×10 entry for People’s Choice. The themes for November are Landscape/Architecture (Non-Living) and Portrait. You may enter into one or both!

Now, a few words from Gina!

First and foremost, thank you for considering me as a speaker for your event. My name is Gina Barca. I am a creative entrepreneur, photographer and designer.

I founded Barca Designs in 2009 shortly after obtaining my Degree in Graphic Design from the International Academy of Design and Technology. My background in design equipped me with a unique set of skills as a photographer. An innate passion for branding and marketing inspired me to begin helping others not only build and grow their businesses but THRIVE!

“A {BRAND} New Year” evolved from my own journey as a creative entreprenuer, specifically how I recently transformed my brand in just ONE year. Through this process I have developed a system for helping others discover and define their brand in five steps. The program provides fundamentals of branding and marketing as well as how to use social media effectively for business.

Through my involvement with the Professional Photographers of America, Florida Professional Photographers and my local guild the Professional Photographers Guild of Palm Beach.  I have seen exponetial growth as a photographer and business owner. I believe that it is my duty to give back to those organizations and become a larger part of the photographic community. It is very rewarding to be able to give back while I pursue my personal goals of achieving my Florida Service Award and Photographic Craftsman Degree.

I am excited for the opportunity to share “A {BRAND} New Year” with you.

Twelve Elements of a Successful Print

With Salon quickly approaching, refer to the following 12 Elements of a Successful Print that judges use in determining the score of a print. If you’re on the fence about an image, review the list below to help you decide! And remember, while it may be a nail-biting, sweaty palms experience, competing helps you grow immensely as a photographer!

Twelve Elements of a Successful Print

There are twelve elements that a print should be measured against when considering an image for competition. These are sometimes known as the Dirty Dozen. The Twelve elements listed below in the order of their importance.

  • Impact is the sense one gets upon viewing an image for the first time. Compelling images evoke laughter, sadness, anger, pride, wonder or another intense emotion. There can be impact in any of these twelve elements.
  • Creativity is the original, fresh, and external expression of the imagination of the maker by using the medium to convey an idea, message or thought.
  • Technical excellence is the print quality of the image itself as it is presented for viewing. Retouching, manipulation, sharpness, exposure, printing, mounting, and correct color are some items that speak to the qualities of the physical print.
  • Composition is important to the design of an image, bringing all of the visual elements together in concert to express the purpose of the image. Proper composition holds the viewer in the image and prompts the viewer to look where the creator intends. Effective composition can be pleasing or disturbing, depending on the intent of the image maker.
  • Lighting—the use and control of light—refers to how dimension, shape and roundness are defined in an image. Whether the light applied to an image is man-made or natural, proper use of it should enhance an image.
  • Style is defined in a number of ways as it applies to a creative image. It might be defined by a specific genre or simply be recognizable as the characteristics of how a specific artist applies light to a subject. It can impact an image in a positive manner when the subject matter and the style are appropriate for each other, or it can have a negative effect when they are at odds.
  • Print Presentation affects an image by giving it a finished look. The mats and borders used should support and enhance the image, not distract from it.
  • Center of Interest is the point or points on the image where the maker wants the viewer to stop as they view the image. There can be primary and secondary centers of interest. Occasionally there will be no specific center of interest, when the entire scene collectively serves as the center of interest.
  • Subject Matter should always be appropriate to the story being told in an image.
  • Color Balance supplies harmony to an image. An image in which the tones work together, effectively supporting the image, can enhance its emotional appeal. Color balance is not always harmonious and can be used to evoke diverse feelings for effect.
  • Technique is the approach used to create the image. Printing, lighting, posing, capture, presentation media, and more are part of the technique applied to an image.
  • Story Telling refers to the image’s ability to evoke imagination. One beautiful thing about art is that each viewer might collect his own message or read her own story in an image.

As I’ve grown and matured as a portrait artist, I’ve learned to approach my work from an artist’s perspective; each session brimming with the potential of a blank canvas, beckoning me to awaken it with my skill and vision”.

August Program – Booray Perry – 5-Minute Photography

Headshot-BoorayPlease join us August 23 as our friend, Booray Perry, comes back to Jacksonville to present “5-Minute Photography: How to Take a Great Portrait of Anyone, Anywhere, at Anytime.”

A good professional photographer must be able to think on their feet. No matter where they are, they should be able to quickly figure out how to take a great portrait. Yet, for many photographers, this sort of high-pressure photography is the biggest hurdle they face. The most incredible studio photographers can freeze up when asked to shoot on location.

It’s not your fault.

You need a system. Booray Perry has developed a step-by-step system that removes the stress and worry from shooting on location. You’ll learn:

  • How to assess your location quickly and decide which path to take to get your shot.
  • Step-by-step walkthroughs for each of the 3 paths:
    • Natural Light
    • Bounce-Flash
    • Off-Camera Light
  • Why you have always struggled and how to overcome it!

Booray will conduct a live-shoot and walk you through each step, showing as he goes how each new element changes his image until finally arriving at the finished product.

Walk into any situation, any location, at any time of day and quickly follow a path that leads you to a great portrait in 5 minutes!

When: Social time begins at 6:30pm followed by announcements and meeting at 7:00pm.

Where: Ramada Inn Mandarin located at 3130 Hartley Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32257.

BIO:

Booray Perry had it all figured out.

After a 20-year career in radio, he retired from being a “wacky morning man” to move to Florida, get married and start a family. He became a stay-at-home-Dad with a wife that brought home the bacon with a successful real-estate business.

Then, 2007 happened.

In two months they were out-of-business. So, Booray went back to his childhood passion and started a photography business. Now he shoots about 100 weddings and events a year and teaches photography and lighting nationwide. Using his ability to talk non-stop for hours, humor and years of experience, Booray is sought after by photographers who struggle with mastering the tools of the trade and understanding the concepts needed to be successful.

Booray Perry is owner/operator of Booray Perry Photography in Tampa, FL. He is a Bronze Medalist in International Print Competition, Certified Professional Photographer (CPP), Photography Craftsman, PPA Counciler, Wedding/Event Photographer of the Year 2012-present for T.A.P.P.A.,  a Featured Speaker at Imaging USA 2015 and Course Instructor at Imaging USA 2016. He also hosts the webcast, “IPC Live” during the four days of judging the International Print Competition and his podcast, “Photobomb” can be heard on Itunes, Google Play, Buzzsprout and Pocketcasts.
