June 26th JPPG Meeting – The Business of Photography by Jerry Weiner

Most people enter the photography business for the photography – not the business. But a business it is, and your success depends on accounting and marketing as much as it does on shooting and editing. In this presentation, Successful businessman, Jerry Weiner, discusses in simple terms the business and marketing side of photography. Find out what goes into the implementation of a successful marketing strategy. Learn about two simple accounting tools to help you monitor your business and make better pricing decisions. And gain the confidence to be a businessperson as well as a photographer.

Jerry has a history of understanding changes in technology and how to leverage them for the future. In January 2007, Mr. Weiner co-founded PWD Labs to provide digital image processing services and traditional lab products to professional photographers.

Plus… Jerry does carry a digital SLR underwater to combine his passion for scuba diving with his love of photography. In addition to his presentation on the Business of Photography, he will share some of his underwater images and talk about the unique set of issues he faces when shooting in that environment!

Jerry is an accounting graduate of the University of Connecticut and spent the first four years of his career as a CPA. In 1982, after almost six years of working for a large, Atlanta-based bank, Mr. Weiner started a business that developed, marketed and maintained bank accounting software for PCs. In 1997, he sold that business to a public company and retired in 2001. From 2001 to 2007 Jerry began active community and philanthropic work that continues to this day. In 2007, he co-founded PWD Labs.

Jerry enjoys scuba diving, underwater and nature photography, astronomy and traveling with family. He also coaches high school boys’ recreational baseball in the spring and fall, and college-age players during the summer. It’s also interesting to note that he and his wife, April, have two sons that have both gone on to careers in the arts! Matthew is a 2008 graduate of NYU School of the Arts with degrees in film and music, and works as a musician, song writer and sound engineer. Jonathan is a 2011 graduate of NYU School of the Arts with a degree in photography and works in the industry.

We’re sure to all learn something from Jerry… it’s a different program than usual for us and a night we shouldn’t miss!

See you then… and at Chili’s after the meeting!

February 28th Meeting – Sam Gardner (sculpting life with light) & Patricia Mathis (post processing with Photoshop & NIK)

Join us on February 28th as we welcome our special guest, Sam Gardner and Patricia Mathis, as our speakers for the evening!

Sam Gardner will begin with a program on building art into your photographs and how to work with clients for posing them in the most flattering and fun styles. This is an illustrated talk with some brief demonstration time. The program is called Vitasculptore Illuminare…(sculpting life with light), and takes a look at how to incorporate techniques that painters and sculptors have used for centuries. This program will change the way you look at lighting and photography!

Patricia Mathis will share some of her post-production techniques using Photoshop and NIK software to bring the images to final stages. Her techniques are based upon the fact that she and Sam have captured great files that are exposed well to start with so she can enhance rather than repair images. This eye on the final product throughout your sessions can greatly improve the number of “good ones” and eliminate a huge amount of editing time for you.  The result is a more efficient session, which the clients appreciate, and a more efficient editing and finalizing session, which YOU should appreciate…  You will make more money in less time, have more fun, create more artistic images to appeal to your client’s hearts, and touch their lives in ways you didn’t think were possible.

Social time will begin at 6:30pm and the meeting will begin approximately 7:00pm at the Ramada Inn Mandarin (I295 & San Jose Blvd). Don’t forget your entry for Peoples’ Choice! Please join us at Chili’s on San Jose after the meeting!

Guests are welcome! If you have not attended a Jacksonville Professional Photographers Group meeting before, you are welcome to attend your first meeting complementary! We hope you’ll join us!

Brian Idocks “BRIANized” Seminars Cancelled

Unfortunately, due to an emergency that has come up, Brian won’t be able to stay the day after our Fall Salon to give us his “BRIANized” day seminar, originally scheduled for October 25th.  We will be working to bring Brian back at another time.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

October Meeting & Seminar – Fall Salon & Get BRIANized

We just spoke to MJ, our much esteemed and often appreciated salon chairman, to get information about our October meeting. We luckily caught him just in time before another one of his road trips. We knew there would be a meeting…we knew it would be all about what we call Salon…which can also be understood to be a kind of image education night. We also knew it would take place at our usual spot at the Ramada with a moderator and 3 guest judges from around the state. In fact, most members and guests usually start arriving as early as 6 PM and socialize until we start at 7 PM sharp! And, as always, there will be no People’s Choice on the same night as Salon.

But what we did not know, was if there were going to be any changes from the ordinary… any unexpected, interesting twists in store for the big night! Sometimes a little change can be acceptable. So, here’s what we found out…

The entire meeting is being moved to MONDAY night October 24th!
Just one night earlier!
Same time, location, and everything… just one night earlier!

(deadline to e-mail MJ your entries is 24 hours before the meeting!)
Salon rules will be posted very soon!

Why the change? “We’ve got our reasons”, he said with a grin. So, as the explanation unfolded, it made perfect sense… one of our judges will be staying over, right here in Jax, in order to put on one of his newest programs in his “BRIANized” Series. YES! Brian Idocks will be here again with his latest program. He was here almost 2 years ago with a different program and was very well received.

You’ll love his style, you’ll love his delivery, and you’ll really love the price of admission! Don’t miss Salon on Monday… and don’t miss the Tuesday follow-up with Brian Idocks!

BRIANized… with Brian Idocks on TUESDAY the 25th!

Take the afternoon class… or just take the evening deal… Or why not just take both? If you take both we’ll knock $5.00 off admission!

  • An Afternoon Shoot with Brian at Susan Michal’s Studio from 2 – 5 PM
  • An Evening session covering his latest Photoshop & Post Production Tips held at Desktop Darkroom from 7:00 – 9:30 PM

PRICE?

  • Afternoon Class just $20 for members, $30 for non-members!
  • Evening Class just $20 for members, $30 for non-members
  • Just do both sessions…it’s a “no-brainer” to get BRIANized! Take both & we’ll knock $5.00 off admission!

From 5-7 we’ll stop over at our Chili’s just down from Ramada, then head over to Desktop for Brian’s second program. (Dinner not included in price of seminars)

July 26th Meeting – Ralph Romaguera – Executive Portraits and Working with Charities

We hope you’ll join us at our July 26th JPPG meeting as we welcome Ralph Romaguera to Jacksonville! Ralph’s program, “Executive Portraits and Working with Charities“, is sure to inspire all of us!

In 2007, Ralph Romaguera was only the ninety-sixth person to ever receive the Fellow in the American Society of Photographers.

To receive the Fellowship, one needs to enter a body of work and write a thesis that ties the story to a collection of images. Romaguera wrote about his life growing up in New Orleans and created a collection of images of role models selected by a philanthropic group called the Young Leadership Council.

Romaguera will explain working with a charitable organization as well as how he photographed these high profile members of the community. He will also show how to create mutually beneficial relationships with these people while selling high-end portraits.

Guests are welcome!
